Speech-Language Pathology
Individualized plans of therapy are developed to meet the individual needs of each student/client identified with a speech and /or language disorder. Remediation areas are summarized below:
ARTICULATION DISORDERS
1. SUBSTITUTION of one sound for another, as in /t/ for /k/, /th/ for /s/ and /w/ for /r/ 2. OMISSION of a sound as in /mart/ for /smart/ 3. DISTORTION of a sound which results in the production of the intended sound in a fairly recognizable altered fashion
LANGUAGE DISORDERS
A language disorder is characterized by :
1. Difficulty understanding language or following directions 2. The inability to choose appropriate words and combine them correctly for sentences 3. The lack of age appropriate language comprehension and expressive abilities
FLUENCY DISORDERS
A fluency disorder is characterized by :
1. An abnormal amount of involuntary repetitions 2. Hesitations 3. Prolongations 4. Blocks 5. Disruptions in the natural flow of rate and rhythm of speech
VOICE
A voice disorder is characterized by :
1. Abnormal vocal pitch 2. Abnormal loudness (too loud or too soft) 3. Abnormal quality (hoarse, harsh or breathy) 4. Abnormal resonance (hyponasal or hypernasal)
